This film tells parallel stories of two women artists. One of them is a musician who returns to Beijing after years of studying in Paris and feels completely out of place. She tries to run her brother's restaurant but realizes that she is not made for that kind of existence. The other woman is a painter and a photographer whose relationship with her German boyfriend is stifling her. She cannot find an outlet for her talent in a society that represses artists. The "miandi" of the title is the cheap yellow taxi popular among the young people of Beijing, which symbolizes their transitory existence between East and West, tradition and modernity. Inspired by the experiences of contemporary artists in China, Miandi Shijie also reflects director Ma Yingli's sentiments after having spent several years in Europe. This is her graduation film from the Deutsche Film und Ferneshakademie Berlin. The film was screened at the Singapore International Film Festival 1998 and the 4th International Film Festival of Kerala, 1999.
