A man looking for a link to his past makes friends with other men searching for what's missing in their lives in this drama shot in Tanzania. Smith (Smith Kimaro) is a recent college graduate who has returned to Dar es Salaam after years away to find where his mother is buried and look after some family business. Smith doesn't negotiate the city as well as he once did, and he crosses paths with Link (Link Reuben), a man who makes his living guiding tourists around town. Link offers to help Smith find his mother's burial site, and as they make their way through the countryside, they're joined by two other men looking for answers in their lives, salvage man Toatoa (Khalid Saleh Bilal) and cemetery worker Abdul (Abdul Khalfan Malaika). Director Sherman Ong made Kumbukumbu Za Mti Uunguao (aka Memories of a Burning Tree) without a completed script or professional actors; working with a handful of local residents, he allowed them to improvise the story and play the roles based on their own personal experiences, with Ong using his professional know-how to give the film a polished appearance. Memories Of A Burning Tree was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
