In his heyday, dapper French comedian Max Linder ground out one-reel comedies with a frequency and rapidity that would have felled a lesser man. In Max Makes Music, the hero takes up the flute. His instrument has curious effect on others; whenever Max toots his flute, everyone begins laughing hysterically. By film's end, virtually of Paris has been reduced to paroxysms of hilarity. One assumes that the audience greeted the film with just as much enthusiasm. Sadly, in real life, Max Linder was the classic example of the Clown With the Broken Heart; plagued his entire life by mental illness, he committed suicide in 1925.
