I am commissioned by Lincoln Center and Dartmouth College for a new work that will combine chamber music and narrative. The project will be a unique exploration of literature, music and movement. The literature and music currently under consideration are Russian short stories (either solely or in combination) by Chekhov, Tolstoy, Turgenev or Pushkin, coupled with chamber music, instrumental and vocal, by Scriabin, Janacek or Mahler. Over the course of the project’s development both music and literature selections may change. The selected literature will serve as the text or narrative for the movement and the music will serve as the choreography’s emotional pulse. The text will not be read or recited but rather will be explicated and communicated through the structure of the movement and the music. Both the text and the music will share equally in my vision and inspiration for the work. The Sundance Lab will provide a wonderful opportunity to explore, with dancer and actors, the possibilities of narrative through physicality rather than text.
