Berlin-trained director Shantaram directs this melodrama between a cop and a whore that recalls German Kammerspiel films of the early '30s. The film opens with policeman Ganpat, called Moti in the Hindi version of the film (Shahu Modak), saving the beautiful prostitute Maina, Kesar in the Hindi version (Shanta Hublikar), from a raid on brothel where she works. Soon the two fall in love, though her own sense of propriety prevents her from assuming a mantel of middle-class respectability. Later, she is framed for murdering her lecherous relative and refuses Ganpat's attempts to help her. This film not only makes use of expressionist stylistics, but also features a parody musical number of Bombay Talkies films starring Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar.
