The music that flowed from Vienna, Europe's city of music, began to undergo a transition period in the late 19th century, as newer, more experimental forms appeared. Man and Music: Turn of the Century is another entry in the series that places master composers and their works in the framework of their times, and considers the influences of historical, cultural, religious, and other issues. The picture that emerges gives the viewer a better understanding of the men and their music. The works of Gustav Mahler, director of the Vienna State Opera, and Hugo Wolf are discussed.
