Mama Gloria is the name of an earthy but good-natured boarding house owner, played by Olinda Bozan. When Mama Gloria's adopted daughter falls in love with a shiftless gambler, the old lady protests the arrangement, though she secretly hopes that the boy will reform. Ultimately he does, but not before an unhappy interim romance between the daughter and a snooty college student. The musical interludes by the Leucona Cuban Boys were rated the entertainment high points of this forgettable comedy-drama. Hurting Mama Gloria's chances for U.S. distribution was the somewhat offensive characterization of a Jewish student, especially in the light of Nazi persecution of European Jews.
