Mama Day takes place in Willow Springs, an enchanted island off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina and is told from Mama Day's point of view. As wise as she is ancient, this midwife and spiritual center of the mystical island watches changes in the new generation that threaten the values that have kept them and the community strong. Her grandniece, Cocoa, has travelled "beyond the bridge" to New York City to return for a vacation with her husband, George. She sees that her niece has chosen a decent and sensitive man; but he is a native New Yorker, raised as an orphan with no family ties; and a professional engineer who feels alienated from the strong sense of history and the magical beliefs of the island. The only thing Mama Day and George have in common is their consummate love for Cocoa.
But when Cocoa's life is put in mortal danger from a spell cast by a jealous woman on the island, Mama Day must find a way to enlist George's help to break the spell or Cocoa will die a slow and gruesome death. Mama Day must make George believe in all of the things that have had no bearing on his life up until this moment. She knows that to save Cocoa is to save the line as well as the future of Willow Springs.
Mama Day , adapted by the author from her critically acclaimed novel will mark Laurence Fishbume's directorial debut. John Singleton has recently joined the project as producer.
