The Egyptian village of Mafrouza, part of the city of Alexandria, is explored by documentarian Emmanuelle Demoris in the second film in a projected five-part series about the town and its people. In Mafrouza/ Heart, Demoris and her camera observe both the natural beauty of the village as well as the grim poverty that grips nearly all of its residents and the filth and deprivation of a city ignored by the larger world around it. However, Demoris also allows the people of Mafrouza to speak for themselves, sharing their pride, their ambitions, their resilience and their love of the land where they were born. Shot with portable digital video equipment to allow a more intimate relationship with the film's subjects, Mafrouza/Heart was screened in competition at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival.
