Adapted from the classic Greek drama Lysistrata by Aristophanes, this movie uses songs and music in an attempt to update and enliven the ancient (411 BC) original. In the story, the women of Athens are tired of their menfolk fighting all the time and collectively decide to withhold marital relations until peace breaks out. The women of Sparta (whose men are on the other side of the conflict) think this is a good idea and take up the crusade. The women are shown to suffer as much as the men from this abstinence, and everyone involved rejoices when the men finally do what is asked of them. This Greek film was not well-received on its home turf, but the fact that it is filmed on the Acropolis in Athens and the Thesseon in Sparta lends it much visual vigor.
