This first of two short subjects to bear the title The Louis-Godoy Fight is an encapsulation of the February 9, 1940 heavyweight championship bout between Joe Louis and Chilean pugilist Arturo Godoy. After 15 rounds, the judges' decision was in favor of Louis, which stirred a bit of controversy among those fight fans who felt that the contest should have ended in a draw. A close examination of the film reveals that the decision was correct, and that Louis was indeed the victor. The actual fight lasted about 40 minutes, necessitating a bit of judicious pruning to accommodate the film's two-reel length. The Louis-Godoy Fight was released in New York on February 10, a scant 24 hours after the fight itself.
