Several Algerian families left their country due to the war and in 1966 they find themselves all in the Chaaba, a shantytown in the suburbs of Lyon. The "gones" are the children. Split between their Arab identity and the need to find their place in a country that is not very hospitable, they will have to fight against the orders and example handed down by the adults. One of them, Omar, whose father owns the plot of land, attracts the jealousy, resentment and hatred of the other gones because he is an excellent student. Even Hacene, his cousin and best friend, resents him. After various events, arguments and reconciliations the families will successively leave the Chaaba to live in the new social housing complexes, where "instead of being piled next to each other the houses are now piled on top of each other".
