The Argentine La Orquidea was designed as a showcase for alluring movie newcomer Laura Hidalgo. Based on a novel by Sem Benelli, the film is a quaintly old-fashioned melodrama about a beautiful woman who is unable to hold onto her virtue. Hidalgo plays an unwed mother who is condemned by the very male-dominated society who caused her plight. The film veers into Stella Dallas territory as the heroine sacrifices what little she has left for the sake of her daughter (Paola Loew). Filmed on location in Buenos Aires, La Orquidea is a valuable record of that city's "la vida nocturna" during the early 1950s.
