Director Dan Askarian draws his inspiration from famed Soviet director Sergei Paradjanov in this biographical drama. Samuel Ovasapian plays the Armenian monk and musician Komitas (1869-1935). A gifted teacher, Komitas was devastated after the tragic massacre that killed 75% of the Armenian population from 1911 until 1915. The event so disturbed Komitas that he spent the last 20 years of his life in mental institutions. As the 20th century comes to a close, Turkey still has not admitted to the slaughter of over 2 million people in Armenia, a fact that has alienated the country from the European community.
