In his day Sholom Aleichem (best known for Fiddler on the Roof) was known as the "Jewish Mark Twain," and this romantic drama was based on one of his stories. Khavah (Alice Hastings), a Jewish maiden who lives in a small Russian village, loves Fedka (Alex Tenenholtz), whose father Ivan (Phil Sanford) is a Christian elder. The families of the young couple do not approve of their romance, but they get married anyway, and Khavah's father Tobias (Giacomo Masuroff) disowns her. Khava goes to live with Fedka's family, but his mother Parasha (Sonia Radin) makes it clear she doesn't like her new daughter-in-law. In addition, the Czar orders Ivan to expel the Tobias family from the village. Khavah has become so miserable living with Fedka's family that she renounces her marriage vows and reunites with her parents when they are cast out of the village.
