Filmed by Selig's California branch, Kentucky Pioneer would seem to have been inspired by the adventures of Daniel Boone. Even so, the story focuses on a courageous Indian girl who takes pity on a white female captive. Helping the white woman escape, the Indian heroine displays remarkable skill as a horsewoman. Both women arrive at a Boonesborough-like settlement, where the film comes to a rousing conclusion with an outsized Indian attack. Stories of this nature were commonplace in 1910, moving the Variety critic to comment that Kentucky Pioneer offered little that was new.
