Like Yidl with the Fiddle, the Yiddish-language The Jolly Paupers provides modern viewers with an irresistable, and poignant, glimpse of a lifestyle that was forever obliterated by the Nazis. Filmed in Poland, Jolly Paupers concerns a couple of small-town Jews with big-city notions. There plans to strike it rich are stymied by the provincialism of their tiny community. Despite many setbacks, most prompted by intramural quarrelling, our heroes persevere. Most surviving prints of Jolly Paupers carry English-language subtitles; the trick is finding a good print, one that isn't washed out into virtual blankness.
