An ordinary American and his extraordinary campaign are paid tribute in this compelling documentary. Joe Polowsky's lifelong goal was to bring recognition to the triumphant joining of Russian and American armies at the Elbe River at the end of World War II (exactly on April 25, 1945). He was there for that historic moment, a moment that is recreated through interviews with other soldiers who were also there at the time. In 1955 Joe arranged for a group of 10 Americans to travel to the U.S.S.R. and reunite with several of the Russian soldiers to commemorate the historic April 25th event. This was quite a feat considering the virulence of the Cold War at that time. Joe's struggles and single-minded dedication to promoting peace between the (former) Soviet Union and the U.S. are also set against a cultural backdrop that is illuminating.
