The husband-and-wife acting/directing team of Phillips Smalley and Lois Weber entered into yet another professional collaboration with their mutual direction of the 5-reel Universal production Jewel. Based on a novel by Christian Science advocate Louise Burnham, the film starred Ella Hall as Jewel, the granddaughter of a crusty old aristocrat. Having never forgiven Jewel's father for his drunkenness, the old man takes out his bitterness on the girl. Fortunately, she is a devoutly religious girl, and her unquestioning faith in the goodness of Mankind eventually softens her grandpa's heart. When Jewel falls ill, she refuses to take medicine, serene in the belief that God alone will cure her. Her remarkable recovery has the positive effect of bringing about a reconciliation between her father and grandfather. Co-director Lois Weber's own unswerving Christianity shone through every frame of Jewel.
