Ngawang Gelek is a Buddhist holy man who had been declared the sixth incarnation of an ancient lama before he was forced to leave Tibet due to his outspoken stand against China's occupation of the country. Gelek sought refuge in India, where he met Sandra Harbener, a recent convert to Buddhism who had embraced the faith after a chaotic life in her native Germany, where she'd been a teenaged runaway, an accordion player with a post-punk ensemble, and a drug addict. Gelek and Harbener fell in love and decided to marry, and Jenseits Von Tibet shows them discussing their very different pasts and their Spartan life together. Director Solveig Klaben follows them through their day-to-day life in Berlin, tagging along as Gelek arranges a secret meeting with his parents so they can meet their grandchild. Jenseits Von Tibet received it's American premiere at the 2001 Berlin & Beyond Festival, held in San Francisco, CA.
