Had historical events transpired a bit differently, Otto von Hapsburg would have been, By The Will Of God, the ruler of the Austro-Hungarian empire. This wryly titled documentary interviews the scion to that now vanished throne, soliciting reminiscences of his eventful life, and his opinion about current European politics. There is some irony in the mere fact of this documentary being made, since as the highest representative of the "aristocratic class," he might well have been considered an enemy of the then still socialist state of Hungary. Instead, the film is uniformly respectful. Part of this may be due to the fact that Mr. von Hapsburg was an early and outspoken opponent of Hitler. He also may have drawn a positive response from the filmmakers by asserting his Hungary identity and speaking in fluent Hungarian, despite his having been an exile since early childhood. For a large portion of his life he was a well-regarded journalist in Germany. At the time of these interviews, he was the Bavarian delegate to the European Parliament.
