While on a trip to Venice from Serbia, Ciril -- a Catholic priest who is also an art historian -- discusses the meaning of life with Fritz, a German who has lost his enthusiasm for living. The time is just before World <br>War I, and the two have many fine discussions on the train. Fritz's ex-fiancee, who dumped him, is known to the priest. For Ciril, she was the ideal image of the Madonna as depicted in Italian art. Once in Italy, besides enjoying the great artworks on display, Fritz falls foolishly in love with a "liberated" woman.
