This drama was a bit obvious in making its point. Shopgirl Mary Ellen (Irene Hunt) has a devoted beau in Billy, a boilermaker (Leo Pierson). But she dreams of something more flashy and romantic. On her birthday she was hoping for a watch, and she is bitterly disappointed when Billy only presents her with a bunch of violets. At work she is sent to deliver a dress to the home of wealthy Mrs. Sardoni (Roberta Wilson). While Mary Ellen is waiting for Mrs. Sardoni to look over the dress, the maid comes in with a big box of pink roses. Mary Ellen is envious, and then Mrs. Sardoni's handsome husband (Richard Ryan) walks in. He frowns at the flowers and tells Mary Ellen to take the dress back. Mary Ellen returns to work, dreaming of having a fancy house and handsome husband. Then while she's at the movies with Billy, Mr. Sardoni finds the torn pieces of the card that came with the flowers -- they were sent by a club man who is having an affair with his wife. Infuriated, he shoots his wife and then himself. When Mary Ellen and Billy come out of the theater, the murder-suicide is all over the papers. Mary Ellen looks at her simple violets and appreciates Billy a lot more.
