To film this documentary, the director and cameramen had to win the trust of a whole family, as it covers several years in the life of a troubled teenager, from 1980 to his graduation from Gymnasium (the German term for a rigorous top-notch high school). Along the way, his parents divorce and he moves from his mother's house to his father's house in the company of his live-in girlfriend. Virtually suicidal at the time the film opens, Oliver Neumann is wavering between joining an Asian-inspired religious cult and getting into the punk scene. However, the punk scene offers more outlets for his discontent, and he is shown practicing guitar riffs with his girlfriend and attending concerts, where he is shown initiating some rough slam-dancing.
