The folks at The March of Time, who spent much of the 1940s singing the praises of America's courageous Russian allies, were obliged by events to change their tune in the 1950s. If Moscow Strikes is a cautionary feature-length documentary based on Modern Arms and Free Men, a book by atomic scientist Vannevar Bush, who shares the narrating chores with the March of Time's "voice of doom" Westbrook Van Voorhis. In broad, heavy strokes, Dr. Bush argues for the necessity of maintaining nuclear superiority over the Soviets. He also insists that an Atomic war would not spell the end of mankind, so long as certain precautions were made during peacetime. A bit hard to swallow when seen today, If Moscow Strikes was reportedly very effective back in 1952.
