When ten-year-old Ai Minoru Tanaka) is teased by her classmates for communicating in sign language with her deaf mother Asako (Akiko Oshidari), her mother joins a sign language theater troupe to help Ai have a better understanding of what it means to be deaf. The troupe, Hands, though suffering from the recent death of its founder, perseveres through its troubles and is eventually invited to perform in Tokyo. Directed by Yutaka Osawa and Akihiro Yonaiyama, I Love You was reportedly the first Japanese film to be made by hearing (Osawa) and deaf (Yonaiyama) co-directors.
