This melodrama, based on the stage play by the same name, would be remade in 1922. Tom Logan (King Baggot, who would direct the 1922 version) is the village blacksmith and is devoted to his sweetheart, Ruth (Arline Pretty). But when his kid brother is kicked in the head by a horse, he meets a woman who claims to be a nurse. He falls in love with the woman and forgets about Ruth. The mismatched couple are married and even though they have a daughter, she decides to run off with a former lover. The lover goes to the blacksmith's shop to kill Logan, but instead he kills Logan's estranged father. Logan is accused of the murder and sent to prison; his mother becomes blind from grief. Four years later the mother, with the help of a tramp who witnessed the crime, gets her son pardoned. In an attempt to claim his child, Logan finds his wife and her lover together. The two men struggle, and when the lover tries to shoot Logan, he shoots his wife instead. The lover confesses to his deeds and is taken away, while Logan reunites with the ever-faithful Ruth.
