In view of Thomas Edison's Simon Legree-like treatment of his debtors, it shouldn't be surprising that the protagonist of this one-reel comedy is a grasping landlord. Unable to trust any of his agents, the landlord begins collecting his rents in person. Unfortunately, he is met with violent resistance at every turn as his tenants, ranging from a greengrocer to a washerwoman, punch and pummel the poor fellow. He finally gives up when he finds he hasn't the heart to foreclose on a poverty-stricken old widow. Preferring to live the life of an absentee landlord, our hero rehires his agents and squirrels himself away in the safety of his own home.
