Richard Barton (Paul McAllister) loses both his money and his health, and a doctor tells his wife Helen (Ethel Clayton) that he will die unless he's taken to Sarnac Lake to recuperate. So, as she's done before, Helen goes to the pawnshop, and while she's haggling with the owner, she meets a stranger (Carlyle Blackwell). Unbeknownst to her, the man is Howard Barton, Richard's brother, who has just returned from Australia with a fortune. Since he doesn't know who she is either, he invites her to his place. At first she refuses, but since she really needs the money, she ends up going. Before anything can happen between them, she breaks down and tells Howard about her husband's illness. Instead of taking advantage of her, he gives her money and sends her on her way. They meet again through Richard, who later overhears them talking about their encounter. He spouts angry accusations at his wife, and in spite of her claims of innocence, he throws her out. She goes on to become an actress and makes a hit in a stage play that mirrors the situation between her and the two brothers. By some odd coincidence that only seems to happen in movies, the Barton brothers are both in the audience that night. Richard begs Helen's forgiveness while Howard heads back for Australia.
