The "gem" in this Essanay comedy is a pretty young stenographer, hired by a pair of rogueish businessmen. The catch: the "heroine" is a man, who donned women's clothing when he found out that the company wanted to hire an office girl. The two executives flirt hilariously with their new conquest, only to find out that they've been flummoxed. In the ensuing chase, the enterprising hero winds up diving into the ocean, with the entire police force of Niles, California in hot pursuit. Hiring a Gem was more or less remade by Essanay in 1915 as the Charlie Chaplin vehicle A Woman.
