This romantic drama, with its wild coincidences, was merely a routine Vitagraph programmer, but at least the lovely Alice Joyce was well cast. When she lands a job in the East, Clara Weston (Joyce) has to travel across the country. Along the way, however, she misses her train and has to spend the night at a sleazy hotel and dance hall. Later on, a group of engineers who have been working on the field show up and decide to cut loose. One of them, Rex Fenton (Harry Morey), drinks far too much and tries to have his way with one of the dancers, Dazy (Patsy DeForrest). To get rid of him, she gives him a random room number, which happens to belong to Clara. He breaks in and throws himself on her. Unfortunately, Clara is not able to put the situation behind her, as it leaves her pregnant. With Dr. Howard (Robert Kelley) as her only confidant, she gives birth to the infant in a small Eastern town and leaves it with a nurse so she can go back to work -- where her new boss just happens to be Fenton! Not only that, but they fall in love and marry, and Clara convinces him to adopt the child, which she neglects to admit is her own. Only years later does Fenton find out the truth and, believing Dr. Howard to be the father, causes a huge scene. But when Dr. Howard relates the circumstances that created the child, Fenton realizes he has only himself to blame. He begs Clara for forgiveness, and gets it.
