Obviously beholden to Madame Butterfly, Her American Husband stars occidental actress Teddy Sampson as Japanese heroine Cherry Blossom. The girl's father Tokimada (Thomas Kurihara), a rich and powerful Japanese merchant, hopes to forge a strong East-West business alliance by arranging a marriage between Cherry Blossom and wealthy young American Herbert Franklyn (Darrell Foss). The heroine feigns happiness at this union, but inwardly she pines for her Japanese sweetheart Kato (Jack Abbe). Sorely neglected by her constitutionally unfaithful husband, Cherry Blossom's misery is compounded when her infant son dies. Having been apprised of Franklyn's poor treatment of his daughter by a "vision" experienced by Kato, Tokimada arrives in America, tracks down Franklyn, and strangles the man, then commits hara-kiri to expunge his "sin." It is implied that Cherry Blossom will soon return to the arms of Kato in her native Japan, but this is not spelled out. In the curious manner of the period, actual Japanese actors were seen side-by-side on screen with Caucasians posing as Asians -- the sort of random ethnic insensitivity that would not be acceptable today.
