Produced, written, and directed by Francis Ford, the older brother of director John Ford, this sentimental five reel silent melodrama was actually an expanded version of a 1915 "Gold Seal" three reeler. Ford played the title role himself, while his usual costar, Grace Cunard, portrayed Betty, a Southern belle whose boyfriend (Elmer Morrow) joins the Union forces. When the girl's brother (William Quinn) is captured, the union officer allows him to escape. For doing so, he is brought up on charges of treason, the death warrant brought to President Lincoln to sign. Moved by Betty's story, the Great Emancipator nobly pardons the boy.
