The second of three Essanay films released the week of September 17, 1910, He Met the Champion was a prizefight comedy. In desperate need of money, a young man agrees to the boxing ring with the local champ, hoping to win a 100-dollar prize by "going the distance." During his training period, the hero is given advice by several passersby, who agree to act as his sparring partners. After punching out practically everyone in town, the young man finally faces the champ. The film ends with what was described as an impossible gag -- as if the rest of the story was believable.
