Because Thaddeus Briggs (Spottiswoode Aitken) served under Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War, he named his grandson (Charles Ray) after the former president. Now World War I is upon them, and young Ulysses is anxious to enlist and live up to his name. Grandpappy gives him his old blue uniform and some advice about never getting involved with an actress. Of course, he meets and falls in love with one, Betty Martin (Doris Lee), before he ever leaves the training camp. The romance lands him in trouble when he goes to a forbidden cabaret to save the girl from a man who is forcing himself on her. He winds up in the guardhouse, but Betty, in explaining why he was there, saves him. So even though Ulysses never makes it to the front (at least not in the film), he's still a hero.
