This edition of the The Great Minds of Science series investigates the battle against the diseases that threaten the health of the modern world. With a focus on the work of Dr. Robert Gallo, viewers are taken to the front lines of the war against such diseases as AIDS, the Ebola virus, Lyme disease, and the deadly Hanta viruses. Gallo, the co-discoverer of the HIV virus, offers his insights into how viruses are investigated and, ideally, conquered. He is employed by the National Institute for Health, and is therefore at the forefront of humans' struggle against the microbe. This video series is hosted by Paul Hoffman, editor-in-chief of Discover magazine.
