On December 19, 1910, New York's Grand Central power house suddenly and unexpectedly exploded. Ten people were killed instantly, and 150 people were injured. Naturally, no cameraman was on hand to record the explosion as it happened, but there were several on the scene in the aftermath of the disaster. Among those present were members of the camera crew of Pathe's American division in New Jersey. The photographers managed to get some fascinating shots of the ruined building, and of a demolished auto and trolley car in the vicinity of the blast. Less than three days after the tragedy, Grand Central Power House Explosion was being exhibited in New York; within a few years, the Pathe Newsreel would be a regular feature in theaters all over America.
