The title of this feature-length documentary refers to a fierce tribal chieftain who once ruled the Polynesian Islands with a iron hand. Legend has it that Gow was able to rally a 150-man army from the neighboring islands to do battle against his faraway enemies. This film is a record of the attempt made by modern-day explorer Captain E. A. Salisbury to retrace Gow's steps and to recover hitherto long-lost artifacts of the Western Pacific despot's empire. Among the highlights of this curious enterprise is a scene in which a group of islanders chow down on steaks made from human flesh. Filmed silent, Gow was narrated by William Peck.
