This Swedish production was also released in the U.S. as Heart of a Clown. A Pagliacci story, the film concentrates on two lost souls: A happily married woman who is led astray by a handsome cad, and a clown with a broken heart. The film's dramatic highlight is the clown's drunk scene, which tended to draw snickers from the less sentimental observers. Hailed as a "dramatic masterpiece" when it opened in New York, The Golden Clown failed to make much of an impression with hardened Manhattanites. Perhaps too many masterpieces had already been released in 1928.
