Although this comedy-romance was based on a Rex Beach novel, it doesn't contain any of the author's usual brawny, outdoorsy touches. Instead it involves a young weakling who pretends to be a runner, and two rival ranch-owning women. J. Wallingford Speed (Cullen Landis) is so envious of all the attention track star Culver Covington (Frank Braidwood) receives from the ladies that he poses as a runner himself. Meanwhile, Roberta Keap (Ethel Grey Terry) has come out West to stay at her ranch while she is divorcing her husband, Donald (Kenneth Harlan). Donald, meanwhile, has followed, and goes to stay at a neighboring ranch, also owned by a woman. The rivalry between the two ranches results in a sprint race, with both ranch owners betting heavily. Speed continues his ruse, figuring that he will bow out when Covington, the real champion, shows up. Covington has been in an auto accident and arrives on crutches. Speed has to train for the race himself. The competition, however, turns into an attempt to reconcile the Keaps, which is eventually successful.
