Going Down is a provocative and lively film about four women coping—or not coping—with big city life. It star two of its women screenwriters and is based on their real life experiences. The friendship of the four is an unstable mixture of different dreams and aspirations, held together as much by hostility as by deep bonds of affection and loyalty. The quartet, accompanied by a miscellany of men, infuse Sydney’s seedier side with spirit and riotous drama.
The script’s freshness and immediacy transcends nostalgia and moral comment. The music, a blend of rock, reggae and the blues, by such groups as “The Park Rats,” “The Dynamic Hepnotics,” “Pelmel,” and “Mad Gorilla” is skillfully woven throughout film to reinforce quirks of character and mood.
