Florence Jaugey's documentary Girls to Mothers provides a rare and intimate glimpse of three Nicaraguan adolescent girls, Vivian, Blanca and Kenia, as they make the difficult transition to womanhood wrought by first-time pregnancy and post-natal maternity. Jaugey shoots candid footage of her subjects over a critical three year period, with images captured before and after the birth of the children that reveals the women's difficulties, struggles, successes and elations. Each subject in question finds herself walking that precarious tightrope between her towering dreams and visions of the future, and burdened by the saddening, sobering day-to-day reality of an economically struggling mother in the Third World. Such is the plight they share, along with societal pressures to sacrifice one's individual aspirations for the collective good of the surrounding social fabric.
