Alice Barth (Irene Castle) is an arty, Greenwich Village type and is very comfortable with her lifestyle. But she receives word from her spinster aunt, Hilda Paige, telling her that she is to receive half of a 50,000 dollar endowment (an amount that was much more valuable in 1918!), providing she comes to live at the Paige home. So Alice goes, but she takes her lifestyle and attitudes with her. The small town is scandalized by her smoking, wild clothes and modern views. Canton Leigh, a young man who owns the shipyard there, is as shocked as everyone else, but he nevertheless is attracted to her. A strike happens at the shipyard. Alice saves the drowning daughter of one of the strike supporters, then quells the unrest by waving an American flag at the men (always a handy ploy in a film made during wartime!). After this, it is only natural that Alice and Leigh end up together.
