This tragedy was based on the story by James Oppenheim, and while it featured some standout photography, it was hampered by a complicated plot. Mother Morro (Helen Strickland) runs an inn that is a front for smugglers. Captain Jose, a revenue officer (Robert Conness), allows this to go on because Mother Morro keeps him supplied with women. The woman's daughter, Mercedes (Mabel Trunnelle), has been kept in a convent and is ignorant of her mother's business, but she sneaks away and arrives at the inn one day. Her mother tries to rush her back to the convent but she's already caught the attention of Captain Jose. Mercedes is naively fascinated by the womanizer and she sneaks off to see him. The smugglers, who hate Mother Morro because of the high percentage she charges them, seek vengeance by kidnapping Mercedes and taking her to Captain Jose, who ravishes her. Mother Morro, in turn, sends Amado (Bigelow Cooper) to murder Captain Jose. But in spite of it all, Mercedes still loves Captain Jose, and she goes in his place to be murdered.
