Seijiro Koyama directs this tearjerking war drama, based on a real-life incident. The film focuses on a pair of kamikaze pilots who visit a local elementary school. One of the pilots (Norikatsu Nagano), a student at a prestigious Tokyo music academy, learns that the school houses a prized German-made piano and asks young teacher Kimiko Yoshioka (Mayumi Wakamura) if he can play it. As students and teachers alike look on, he plays Moonlight Sonata and his friend (Minoru Tanaka), a former teacher himself, sings children's songs. After a tearful farewell, the two prepare to make their one and only military run. Fast forward to the present, Yoshioka -- now retired -- learns of the school's plans to junk the piano. After she informs the principal and then the whole school during an assembly, Yoshioka's story becomes news. Soon the press learns of the fate of the two pilots. The musician died on his mission, but his friend survived and lives in Kagoshima, on Japan's southern isle of Kyushu. The veteran (played by screen legend Tatsuya Nakadai) however is unwilling to talk to the press and unwilling to relive those painful memories of the war.
