The Gateway of the Caucasus is the mountain peak of Kazbek, the focal point of this 52-minute documentary. Director Nicolas Levedavero follows an intrepid band of climbers who make it their goal in life to scale the lofty Kazbak and to return from same safely. The ascent is a long one, with occasional time-outs to visit the local peasants and revel in their quaint customs and traditions. The film is capped (literally) by a panoramic shot of the view from the top of Kazbek -- the first time this spectacle had ever been filmed. Unfortunately, the camerawork isn't always up to the challenge, and several scenes in Gateway of the Caucasus suffer from out-of-focus lensing and inadequately framed shots.
