Also known as Normandy to Berlin, this made-for-TV documentary was an outgrowth of the AFI-sponsored documentary George Stevens: A Filmmakers' Journey. While assigned to the US signal corps, Lt. Colonel George Stevens, in civilian life one of Hollywood's top directors, filmed a full-color record of the last 10 months of the war in Europe. Candid closeups of such military leaders of Patton and Montgomery are intermixed with shots of the liberation of Paris, Denmark and Dachau (a warning: the concentration camp footage is quite graphic). The film ends with a roundup of Nazi officials in Berlin. No mere dusty archive piece, the film comes vividly to life, thanks to Stevens' instinctive cinematic knowhow. Narrated by David Schoenbrun, Normandy to Berlin is most often telecast during PBS fundraisers.
