The limited opportunities of the rural South held little promise for African-American women at the turn of the century, and for many, the unknown territory of the country's Northern regions seemed a good place to seek a better life. For many years, they sought dreams of jobs and equality as they escaped the racist attitudes of their home states. Unfortunately, the reality involved menial labor as domestic help due to their lack of training. In Freedom Bags, it will be seen that these women rose above their low-paying work, finding the positive aspects to their predicament.
