A serene and honest young boy brings inspiration to the downtrodden in French director Jean-Pierre Sauné's 2002 drama Free. Forced to leave his tribal homeland due to war, young Hôr (Charles Correa) travels to the Senegalese city of Dakar, firmly resolute in maintaining his dignity by not resorting to thievery or prostitution. While his apparel betrays his rural -- and hence naive -- origins, most of the street people Hôr encounters are taken aback at the youngster's generally optimistic point of view. Making the acquaintance of two fellow street children, Tierno (Mamadou Tall) and Désiré (Siradiou Dia), Hôr inspires his new companions to try to rise above their poverty by abandoning the illegal methods they had previously been using and holding true to the ideals and dreams they once had. However, when tragedy strikes, the children are forced to re-examine their lives of purity -- which will also affect how they choose to react to this seemingly devastating loss in their lives.
