When reporter Gordon Travis (Charles Gunn) tries to investigate the rivalry between two political bosses, he is beaten up by thugs and left on a park bench. One of the bosses, Sylvester Brandon (Edward Martin), finds him and thinks he is a bum. In a plot to ruin his rival, Harrison Westfall (George Pierce), he sets Travis up in luxurious surroundings and tells him to court Westfall's daughter, Ruth (Laura Sears). If the pair marry, then Brandon can cause a scandal by revealing that Ruth is married to a bum. Travis and Ruth actually do marry, but only because Travis has fallen in love with her. Meanwhile, he's gathering up evidence to show up Brandon as the schemer he is. In the end, Brandon is forced to admit defeat.
